Best vitamin C foods

We know that Vitamin C is good for us – when you think of it, you probably picture a glass of freshly-squeezed orange juice, half a ruby grapefruit or a fizzy supplement. But there are a plenty of sources of natural Vitamin C that you can eat at any time of the day, and your body will absorb and use as it needs. Here are some you may not even know about.

Peppers and Chillies

A lot has been said about the health benefits of peppers and chillies when it comes to pain relief and boosting your immune system, but did you know that a half-cup of chopped or diced chili peppers delivers 107.8 mg of vitamin C? Red and green bell peppers contain more Vitamin C than oranges, plus Vitamin A – so put them into a salad, stir-fry or kebabs!

Broccoli and Cauliflower

These cruciferous vegetables give you approximately 120mg of Vitamin C per serving. Add fibre and minerals to that, and you have 3 good reasons to put them on the menu – and they’re LCHF-friendly!

Tropical fruits

Mangoes, pineapples and kiwi fruit all pack a good punch of vitamin C, plus other vitamins and vital minerals. And they taste good.

Strawberries

A cup of strawberries not only contains 84.7 mg of vitamin C, but also folate and other compounds that are good for keeping your heart healthy. Like we needed an excuse to eat fresh strawberries!

Herbs

Many fresh herbs such as coriander, basil, parsley, chives, and thyme are high in Vitamin C – so buy (or grow) them fresh and include them in your meals.

Vitamin C may not cure the common cold, but it helps you get better faster and it’s good for your immune system. Like with any nutrient, taking it naturally via food is always best – all the more reason to include one or more of these foods every day.
