What type of eater are you?

Do you eat three big meals a day, or do you prefer to snack throughout the day? As it turns out, there are actually four distinct types of eaters: free rangers, all-day grazers, repeat eaters and social eaters. Which type are you most like? Let’s take a quick look at each one:

6 foods to keep in your office fridge

The office fridge is often a no-go zone for many people, usually because it is full half-empty jars of condiments, or someone’s leftover dinner that’s been in there for 2 months (and which no one wants to claim.) Take charge, and claim a clean corner of the fridge for your healthy food. Having a stash of snacks like the ones listed below, means you’re much less likely to reach for a chocolate, bag of chips or something else from the nearest convenience store.

Andy’s blog update – The blood results are in

Last week, Andy went for his 50 day / half way blood tests – to see how they compare to when he first started on the Tim Noakes eating plan. As you can see from the table we drew up below showing his main test results, there were a number of changes, most notably the significant increase in his LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. But what do these numbers actually mean, and how do we know if they’re good or bad? We sent Andy’s results to three of our resident doctors, to get their feedback and to help us better understand what’s going on.

Salt in a sandwich

Fact: Most South Africans eat more salt than the World Health Organisation’s (WHO) recommendation of 5g a day (1 teaspoon). In fact, they consume close to double that – around 11g a day! Most of it comes from processed food – bread is the biggest culprit – which contains huge amounts of hidden salt that’s added during the manufacturing process. Other processed foods which increase your salt intake include hard margarine, and processed meat like sausage and polony.

A salt-free braai? It’s possible!

It’s hard to believe, but we did a salt-free braai with Ultimate Braai Master Judge Bertus Basson, and he was really impressed with the flavour he achieved without salt. He didn’t think he could do it!

The traditional braai is a South African institution, where the great outdoors becomes your kitchen, your cooler box converts into the kitchen table and the fire replaces your stove. But salt, along with black pepper and your favourite marinade, is a vital item. Or is it?

Rooibos & berry iced tea

Water forms part of every cell in our body, and every single system and function in the body depends of water to perform optimally.

Around 80% of our daily water intake comes from beverages, and the rest comes from the food we eat. Foods like soups and stews, tea and coffee, fresh fruit and veggies, and ice tea all contribute. However, it’s important to make sure that not all the liquid we consume contains sugar or other preservatives. Opting for water over soft drinks can also help with weight management.

Not everyone enjoys drinking water, but there are loads of ways to turn this into an easy-to-follow habit. Add mint or slices of lemon and other fruit such as oranges, peaches, strawberries, apple or cucumber. You’ll be surprised how much flavour it adds.

Why not try this Rooibos and berry iced tea?

Andy’s fifth week on the Tim Noakes 100 day eating plan

We check in with Hello Doctor’s CEO, Andy, to get his latest feedback on the 100 day Tim Noakes eating plan.

Andy’s just entered week 6 of the eating plan, and reckons this past week was his toughest week to date. Not because of what he was eating, but because he drank 6 days out of 7 due to a hectic social schedule that included cricket, drinks with friends, a charity golf day, the Springfield Fair, his daughter’s birthday, and cheering on the cyclists in the Cycle Tour. A busy week to say the least!
