Being eco-friendly is all the rage but what’s more important is that by being green you save money, natural resources and you’re protecting your family from harmful chemicals. It also happens to be spring time, so why not bring some freshness into your home?
By now you’ll have noticed that almost ALL cleaning products have a “keep away from children” sticker or logo – not to mention all the other chemicals that are hard pronounce! Whatever they are, chances are they’re not that good for you and they certainly aren’t good for the environment. What many people don’t realise, is that nature has its own set of cleaners. We’re not talking about bugs, we’re talking about everyday items like:
- vinegar
- lemon
- lime
- plants
- salt
- water
Using the right amount of certain ingredients, you can create your own homemade cleaners that are inexpensive and safer to use.
Here are four easy recipes for everyday use.
- Furniture polish – Mix half a cup of water with a few drops of lemon oil and place the mixture in a spray bottle. Squirt the solution on a slightly damp cotton cloth and wipe your furniture.
- Drain Cleaner – Mix half a cup of salt into 4 litres of warm water and pour it down the drain.
- Air Fresheners – There are few things you can do to clean the air around your house. Scented candles are great for freshening up the air in your house, but you can also place little pots in your house with diluted essential oils.
- Bug repellent – Most bug repellents are very harmful to children, so this is a must have if you’ve got a pest problem. Spraying vinegar near areas infested with ants will keep them at bay. Sprinkle some cinnamon, baby powder or chalk on ants and they should stay away. Basil, marigolds, tansies and rosemary plants are great for keeping all sorts of insects away from your home.
