If you are struggling with depression, it’s important to talk to your clinic or doctor. Once you’ve seen the doctor, there are some things you can do to help your treatment along. Here are some ways to help you cope with depression.
1. Eat right to feel better
Choose foods that are better for your body and give you energy for longer – brown bread or rice instead of white, less sugar or fizzy drinks, and more fresh fruit. And choose rooibos tea over coffee!
2. Exercise every day
Exercise gets your body to make hormones called endorphins – these make you feel better. A steady walk every day, or even a run, will help with this
3. Eat more fish!
There are special fats found in oily fish, like salmon, sardines, pilchards and mackerel. They are called Omega-3 fats and they help you to manage your mood.
4. Find time to relax
This means whatever helps you to forget your worries – choose healthy things like playing a game of soccer, visiting a good friend, cooking something you like, reading, listening to music, walking in a park or even prayer. Make sure you get some stress-free time every day – even just 20 minutes
5. Get some sleep
Seems easy enough, but many people aren’t getting enough sleep and this puts their bodies under a lot of stress.
