Fitness for beginners – Adults

Do you want to become stronger and fitter, but can’t be bothered with the idea of a gym? No problem. There are many simple and effective exercises that you can do daily! If you’re consistent and committed, you’ll get the results that you want. Try these out.

Use the stairs. The next time you’re at the mall resist the temptation to take the escalators or lifts to get to your destination – take the stairs instead! Losing weight and becoming fitter is a combination of burning calories and working your muscles. Do you work in a multi-floor office complex? Do exactly the same thing, take the stairs. It’s recommended that you should take at least 10,000 steps per day – this may sound crazy, but you’ll be surprised by how easy it is to achieve.

Swimming. This is one of the best exercises for a full-body work-out that will not only help you shed fat, but also give you more strength. The way it works: when swimming, you’re constantly using your own body weight as resistance. It’s also perfect if you find that walking or jogging puts too much impact on your knees. So, it’s time to take the plunge and reap the benefits. If you don’t have a pool at home, ask one of your friends (they may even decide to train with you!).

Start cycling. If there’s ever been a way to burn calories and toughen up your legs, cycling is king! Firstly, once you’ve mastered keeping the bicycle balanced, the rest is simple: just pedal! You can do this at your own pace and slowly build up the intensity. It is one of the best exercises to increase your fitness because:

  • You build up a sweat
  • Your body temperature rises
  • Your heart rate increases
  • You breathe more deeply, meaning your lungs are being exercised too
  • It increases your strength and stamina

Another great benefit of cycling is that it’s fun! You can ask a group of your friends to join you, so it becomes a social event! You’ll be able to catch up on the latest news and happenings in your friends’ lives while you’re pedalling away – it’s a win-win situation. There are many trails that you can use; try doing a different one every time you make the plan to cycle with your friends.

Take your dog for a walk. This is another enjoyable, easy activity that you can (and should) do on a daily basis. Your dog needs exercise to keep him healthy, just as much as you do! You can take your dog down to the beach, forest or even around your neighbourhood. Watch his tail wag as you stroll together! Dogs are known as man’s best friend – a daily walk means you’re being a good friend back!
