How to get off the booze train

The holidays are upon us, and for many people this means overindulging, but at what cost? Is it possible to have a booze-free festive season? Yes it is!

Think not? These delicious non-alcoholic beverages may change your mind.

Pomegranate mojito
Addicted to your cocktails? Then you will love this tasty mocktail. Trade in the rum for fresh pomegranate juice and lemonade, and enjoy with crushed ice, fresh mint leaves, and a dash of lime juice. Add a slice of lemon on the side for the perfect touch. This concoction is the ideal summer evening sundowner or for days spent by the poolside.

Fruit punch
Orange juice can become boring – unless it’s in a fruity punch. Turn regular OJ into something sparkly and sweet by mixing it with lemonade, lime cordial and cranberry juice. Pop in some berries or any fruit of your choice, and serve with some ice. This one will be a winner with your friends and family.

Fruit-infused water
Want to cut your sugar intake and drink more water? Hydrate with this refreshing thirst quencher: grab a pitcher of water and add slices or cubes of your favourite fruit. Let it infuse for a few minutes and voila! Simple, easy and a great way to stay hydrated over the holidays or to serve with meals.

Flavoured tea
With the variety of flavours to choose from, you’re sure to find one to send your spirit soaring this season. Think strawberry-vanilla, apple-cinnamon, and peach-mango tea. Flavoured teas are yummy, and pack a healthy punch. Plus, they are low in calories, which means you can have that extra slice of cake without the guilt.

Spiced coffee
Get toasty with a cup of hot spiced coffee. Place ground coffee, cardamom, cinnamon and nutmeg in a coffee filter. Add water, mix gently and allow to brew for a few minutes. Then pour the blend into a cup, and garnish with a dollop of whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg. This should get you warmed up and in a merry mood in no time!

Enjoy your drink the safe way
If alcohol puts the “festive” in your season, and you absolutely cannot pass up on that drink, indulge safely.

  • Pace yourself and stick to one or two alcohol units per day.
  • Find an alcoholic drink that agrees with you and doesn’t send your mind and body into a tailspin the following day.
  • Know your limits. Work out how much alcohol your body can tolerate – and stick to them!
  • Make sure you eat before you drink.
  • Don’t drink and drive. Make sure you always have a designated driver when you go out.
  • Have “rest days”. Give your body time to restore and cleanse itself.
