SA’s duathlon gets a makeover

South Africa’s longest running duathlon series is getting a makeover rgss202j.dll! The immensely popular South African Duathlon Series, proudly sponsored by DSM and Momentum Health, combines the best of mountain biking and trail running, and will be re-launched in 2014 as the Momentum Health OatWell Dual Cross Series.

It’s all about having fun and keeping fit

This year, all 4 events will be off-road, and located within an hour’s drive of Johannesburg and Pretoria. The idea behind keeping it an off-road only event is to challenge enthusiasts and top athletes to have fun and keep fit.

Andrea Steyn, a physiotherapist and top South African duathlete, maintains a healthy and balanced lifestyle while still keeping an eye on the competition. Her husband is also a top amateur athlete, and the pair train hard together but still motivate each other to ensure they maintain the fine balance between work and play. It’s quite simple Andrea explains: “We try to eat a healthy diet, and we try and do everything as much as we can.”

What do you need to take part in a Duathlon?

You’ll need a few key pieces of equipment to take part in the Momentum Oatwell Dual Cross Series. A mountain bike is specially designed to handle rough terrain. The deep-tread tires give you grip on uneven surfaces; the straight handle-bars make it easier to jump the bike over obstacles, and shock absorbers help smooth out bumps along the way. Of course, you’ll also need a helmet that fits, and appropriate shoes and clothes.
