Schumacher no longer in coma

You probably remember a time when Michael Schumacher’s name was hardly ever out of the media – especially during Grand Prix season. However, today Schumacher is driving the longest and hardest race of his life, the one to recover from a very serious head injury he sustained while skiing in December last year. He’s remained in a medically induced coma since the accident, and attempts to wake him up was put on hold.  Today however, his management company said in a statement: “Michael has left the CHU Grenoble to continue his long phase of rehabilitation. Is it safe to exercise when you’re sick?

Earlier this week the debate about exercising (and in this case participating in an event) when you’re sick, came under the spotlight again after Louis Du Preez, a “healthy” 39 year old man collapsed in the final stage of the Comrades Marathon, and later died in hospital. It turns out that Du Preez may have had a viral infection which led to organ failure.

So does that mean it’s not safe to exercise when you’re sick – our resident Doctor weighs in.

Andy’s blog update – The blood results are in

Last week, Andy went for his 50 day / half way blood tests – to see how they compare to when he first started on the Tim Noakes eating plan. As you can see from the table we drew up below showing his main test results, there were a number of changes, most notably the significant increase in his LDL (bad) cholesterol levels. But what do these numbers actually mean, and how do we know if they’re good or bad? We sent Andy’s results to three of our resident doctors, to get their feedback and to help us better understand what’s going on.

Do you have an addictive personality?

Addictive personalities tend have certain behaviours or habits in common, for example they might be attention seeking, compulsive and impulsive. If you find yourself answering yes to more than half of the questions in our quiz, then it might indicate that you are at risk of, or already indulging in addictive behaviours.

According to Dr Thomson from Hello Doctor, everyone possess’ the ability to become addicted to something at some stage in our lives, and this is worse if you are genetically predisposed to an addiction, for example alcohol or drugs.
