What is depression, really?

Depression is a medical condition that causes a constant feeling of sadness and lack of interest in everyday life. Even simple things like getting dressed in the morning or eating can become a daunting task.   Depression affects how a person feels, behaves, thinks and acts and is divided into three categories – mild, moderate and major depression.

While it’s natural to feel various negative emotions after a traumatic event, like a break-up, death or job loss, if you’re suffering with depression for weeks or months on end, it could be time to see your doctor!

What Are The Signs And Symptoms Of Depression?

If you have any of the following persistent symptoms then you could have clinical depression, however this can only be diagnosed by a doctor so the sooner you seek help the better. Remember: over time, and with the right medication and support, depression can be overcome.

  • If you have thoughts about death, self-harm, suicide or have attempted suicide
  • If you’ve experienced changes in sleep patterns – like sleeping too much or too little, broken sleep, or difficulty falling asleep
  • If you’ve lost your appetite, overeat and/or have unintended weight loss or gain
  • If you feel tired nearly every day and lack energy for daily activities
  • If you find it difficult to concentrate, make decisions or remember details
  • If you have persistent aches or pains, headaches, or digestive problems that do not get better with treatment
  • If you feel restless and easily annoyed on a regular basis
  • If you feel sad and hopeless nearly every day and for most of the day
  • If you have lost interest or pleasure in activities you used to enjoy
  • If you feel guilty, helpless, or worthless or suffer from frequent crying spells

What Are The Different Types of Depression?

Major depression, also known as clinical depression, and chronic depression, also known as dysthymia, are two of the most common types of depression. Postnatal depression, also known as postpartum depression can affect women after giving birth.  You might also experience something know as the “baby blues” where you may feel emotional, teary, moody, unable to sleep, anxious and exhausted. It’s important to remember that this is completely normal during the first couple of weeks after having a baby, it’s just your hormones settling down! You’ll start to feel normal again soon J

Dr. Russell Thompson from Hello Doctor recommends that you draw from the resources that you have and rely on the support from your partner or loved ones. He also suggests taking things one day at a time, making sure you follow a balanced diet, and try and get a bit of exercise every day – it really does make a difference to your mental health. “Depression is an easily diagnosable and treatable condition, so the sooner you seek help for it the better.”

What Should You Do If You Feel Depressed?

Dr. Russell Thomson also suggests that you set up an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible if you experience more than 4 of the above mentioned symptoms.  You can also speak to one of our trusted doctors – just sign up here. If you’re already a member, just login here.
