Any progress on achieving defined abs, yet? Spring is upon us. If the cold, rainy weather has turned you into a couch potato, it’s time to start lifting and crunching (and we don’t mean potato chips!) your way to your summer body. Let’s kick-start your routine!
First, decide on what goals you want to achieve? A balanced routine needs to include the following:
- Fat loss (Cardiovascular exercise)
- Strength training
Stretching (A necessity, not a choice!)
Before you begin any exercises, you need to warm up your muscles! Getting the blood pumping through your body prior to your workout will lessen the chances of you pulling, straining or even tearing a muscle. Don’t believe us? Take a look.
One of your goals is most likely to burn off fat so that you can uncover that hidden 6-pack! And you’ve probably been told that jogging or running is the best way to this, right? While you will burn calories, jogging and running puts a lot of impact on your knees and so if you have suffered a knee injury in the past, we’d recommend an alternative such as using the stationary bike and elliptical machine. – let’s hear from the professionals!
Nutrition! Training and nutrition go hand-in-hand. You need to firstly understand and eat a balanced, healthy diet full of the correct macronutrients.
It’s time to lift some weights! The amount of weight doesn’t necessarily matter – it’s about technique. Most of you are not planning to be power lifters, but rather want a toned physique. Lifting light weights are perfect for this!
By using lighter weights, you’re able to do more repetitions. This allows more blood and oxygen to be pumped into the muscle, which will give you the muscle growth that you want. The other advantage is that you’re not breaking the down the muscle tissue, meaning quicker recovery time. You’ll be able to hit these body parts more times than if you were lifting heavy weights.
Did you know that by training this way, you’re burning calories at the same time? Talk about a win-win situation.
So there you have it – the basics you need to shed winter and get yourself ready for a good, good summer!
