You can’t hole up in a bunker for the rest of winter, but the good news is: you don’t have to. Bearing in mind that there’s no sure-fire way to stop a cold, here are some simple strategies to make you less vulnerable to the aches and sniffles through the worst of the season.
Wash Your Hands
We’ve all heard it before, but washing your hands is the single most important way to stop the spread of colds. About 80% of infectious diseases are spread by touch, cold germs getting on your hands and from there into your eyes and mouth.
Sure, you can’t keep cold germs out of your house altogether, but if you keep everybody’s hands clean, they’re much less likely to get sick. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and scrub for a minimum of 20 seconds.
Use Your Elbow!
You were probably taught to cover your nose and mouth with your hands when you sneezed or coughed, but that’s so last millennium and before we knew that hands spread viruses. Instead, use the crook of your elbow – or a tissue.
Catch the germs that hand-washing misses! Cold viruses can live on surfaces for hours, so think about disinfecting areas like door-handles, remote controls, keyboards and toys. Use a disinfecting spray or wipe, or you can even make your own by mixing 1/4 cup bleach with 3.5 litres of warm water. But don’t become OCD with this – you can’t wash down everything a toddler touches.
Take Care of Yourself, For Immunity’s Sake!
While there’s no concrete evidence that getting enough sleep, eating right and reducing stress can prevent colds, there’s evidence that these healthy habits strengthen your immune system, so they certainly can’t hurt. Remember that you can also talk to your doctor about flu vaccinations before the season begins.
If anyone in the family does get a cold or the flu, it doesn’t mean that you’ve failed, remember: viruses are sneaky and very adaptable. But these tips will give you more than just a fighting chance – be well.
