It’s true that sleep allows your brain to recharge, regrows muscle tissue and strengthens the immune system, but just like lack of sleep, oversleeping is also unhealthy. Let’s take a look.
1) Increases your risk of depression:
Oversleeping is linked to a number of medical conditions such as depression.
You know the feeling. When you’re depressed, your sleep is your way of ‘escaping’ issues that you don’t want to deal with. The problem is that when you wake up, they’re still there. To escape, you just sleep more.
Depression may make you feel that there is no hope or help…but there is!
Counselling: Counsellors, or some life coaches are not necessarily medical doctors, but people who are trained to be able to break through that “barrier” that is causing your depression. They are there to listen to YOU and offer advice and coping mechanisms, giving you the tools to gain the strength to overcome the challenges that have made you feel this way.
Medication: Sometimes medication may also be necessary to help you in your fight. A counsellor will be able to refer you to a psychiatrist (a specialist medical doctor) who will advise and prescribe anti-depressants. Don’t feel that taking medication makes you weak, but rather view it as another tool.
Support centres: If you aren’t sure where to start, support centres are your best option. Everyone who works at these centres are trained to give you the direction that you need and can refer you to specialist counsellors and psychiatrists.
Remember, by not dealing with the issues, you’re causing your depression to worsen.
2) Causes weight gain:
Your metabolism slows down when you sleep. Your metabolism is a chemical process that gives you energy by using the nutrients you get from the food you eat.
By oversleeping, the energy is not being used and is stored as fat in your body. A high body fat percentage puts you at a higher risk of suffering medical complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure.
3) Affects your memory:
One of the reasons you may be sleeping so much is because the quality of sleep is poor. The lack of quality sleep can affect the accuracy of memory for people who suffer from depression, anxiety and ADHD and put you at higher risk for a high BP and diabetes.
This is because they all cause less blood to flow to the brain: your brain needs oxygen as well as sugar to function properly.
4) And here’s the kicker… too much sleep can make you feel more tired!
As unlikely as it sounds, it’s true. It’s been a long week, you hit the pillow at 7pm in the hopes of feeling refreshed and ready to embrace the weekend…but you don’t. Instead you feel just (maybe more) tired than before.
So, why does this happen? Oversleeping confuses your brain, messing with your body’s daily cycle. Basically, your brain’s light switch was never dimmed to the ideal setting for the period of sleep, even if your bed-side light was.
It’s important that you find a balance (under-sleeping is just as bad for you) that works for you so that you can maintain consistency. For most people, about 7 hours of sleep should be the perfect balance. This will allow you to get the best quality sleep possible, which will help you avoid the physical and mental complications associated with having too much sleep.
