What you can do to whiten discoloured teeth

Everybody wants pearly whites, but is there a way to get brilliant white teeth without spending a bunch of money? Here are three things you can do to brighten up your smile.

1. Use whitening toothpaste

Not all toothpastes are designed to whiten your teeth. The main purpose of toothpaste is to clean your teeth, but some brands contain an ingredient that may make your teeth look whiter. Blue covarine, the whitening ingredient, binds to your teeth and makes them look less yellow. It’s not a permanent solution, so don’t bank on toothpaste being your long-term answer to whiter teeth.

2. Teeth whitening kits

Although not as common as toothpaste, teeth-whitening kits are more effective. It’s very similar to the stuff dentists use to whiten teeth, the only drawback is that you might not get it right. The kit usually comes with a mould (which you put over your teeth) and a bleaching product. The aim is to put a little bit of the bleach in the mould and place the mould over your teeth for an hour or two. If you go this route, it’s very important for you to follow the instructions. Any deviation from the instructions could end up in a bit of a catastrophe – after all, you are putting bleach in your mouth!

3. See a dentist

The safest and most effective method to whitening your teeth is to visit a qualified dentist. It’s not the cheapest option, but you’ll see a massive difference, even with your first treatment. Dentists use bleach to whiten your teeth, but they also use a protective mouth guard to ensure none of the bleach is ingested. They also shine a special light on your teeth, which helps the bleaching process. Most sessions run for 30 – 45 minutes, so you can visit your dentist during your lunch break, but be careful not to eat or drink anything that could stain your teeth .
