Low blood pressure, also known as hypotension, is where blood pressure in your arteries is abnormally low. It doesn’t always cause symptoms and it’s normally nothing to worry about. But, if your blood pressure drops too low, it can restrict the amount of blood flowing to your brain, which can cause dizziness, light-headedness or fainting.
What is low blood pressure?
Your heart pumps a constant supply of blood around your body through blood vessels. Blood pressure is how we measure how hard blood is pushing on the sides of your arteries as it flows through them. Doctors measure it in two ways:
- systolic pressure – the pressure when your heart beats and squeezes blood into your arteries
- diastolic pressure – the pressure when your heart rests between beats
Look at it this way: if your systolic blood pressure is 120 mmHg and your diastolic blood pressure is 80 mmHg, your blood pressure is 120 over 80. Your doctor will write it down as 120/80.
Normal blood pressure is between 90/60 and 140/90. So, if your blood pressure reading is under 90/60, then it’s considered low blood pressure.
Why do I have low blood pressure?
You can have low blood pressure for many reasons, such as:
- Your age
- The time of day
- The temperature
- Certain illnesses
- An injury or shock
- Side-effects from some medications
Treatment and self-help
If you have low blood pressure, but you don’t get dizzy or faint, then you probably don’t need treatment. If you do have symptoms, then it’s best to see your doctor. Here are some things your can do to feel better:
- Stand up slowly.
- Don’t stand for long periods of time.
- Make sure you’re drinking enough water.
- Cut down on alcohol and avoid caffeine at night.
- You can eat a bit more salt!
- Eat smaller meals, more often.
Most important: Have a proper check-up with your GP every year. A yearly check-up includes blood-pressure measurement, and it’s one of the most important health markers.
